The Thaxter is a charming boutique hotel located in the heart of Portsmouth - within walking distance of the city’s best restaurants and local destinations. The vibe is tranquil and inviting and the rooms are spacious and comforting. The staff couldn’t have been nicer and they went out of their way to make my short overnight stay a memorable one. Well done!

As a new yorker who lives in nyc i know i can be pretty picky. This botique hotel was excellent. The decor is beautiful. We stayed in the 2 bedroom 1600 sq foot room with 2 baths and a kitchen. It felt like i was a guest in someones home. The staff was both friendly and the check in and out was seamless. I highly recommend this hotel. Parking is challenging but parking in general in Portsmouth is an issue. They have valet parking for $40.00 per day.

We stayed in the standard king plus room which was very nice. It was just the right amount of space. My sister was in a standard queen room and it was small. Only had room for 1 chair. The girl at the check in desk helped us with our luggage. Everyone was pleasant and sociable. Place was very clean. Hotel was centrally located and walking distance to restaurants, shops, and parking.

This small boutique hotel of 15 rooms is the perfect spot to stay if you visit Portsmouth. Close to bars and restaurants within walking distance, but off the beaten path so that you can enjoy the peace and quiet out of the main downtown area. Each room is decorated with an elegant color pallet. We stayed in on of the smaller rooms, but it fit our needs for what we were in the area for. The beds are comfortable, showers beautiful and clean, and the hotel common area comfortable to hang out with friends. The staff is super accommodating, and the service is run BnB style, curated to your personal arrival. There’s a Japanese restaurant in the restaurant, Nichinan. We didn’t try it, but we plan to visit there the next time we are in town, we’ve heard great things! IG Lentz_explore

A snowstorm canceled our weekend getaway to Charleston, so we decided to pivot: booked a room with a soaking tub at the Thaxter hotel and enjoyed a lovely dinner at the excellent Nichinan restaurant downstairs. Well appointed room and frictionless check in/out! We now have a new local “go to” staycation/date night location. Thanks so much Thaxter!…

I can’t say enough great things about Hotel Thaxter. From the moment I arrived, it was clear this place operates on a level well above your typical boutique hotel. The location is unbeatable—tucked right in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, just steps from the restaurants, shops, and historic charm that make this city special. The hotel itself is stunning. Thoughtfully designed, beautifully restored, and full of character without ever feeling dated. The rooms strike that perfect balance of cozy and upscale: plush bedding, spotless bathrooms, high-end finishes, and little luxury touches that make a huge difference. You can tell they prioritize comfort and quality in every detail. What really sets Hotel Thaxter apart is the service. Every staff member I interacted with was genuinely warm, attentive, and eager to help. It never felt forced—they make you feel like a valued guest rather than just another reservation on the books. The lobby and common areas are equally impressive—calm, refined, and perfect for relaxing with a coffee in the morning or unwinding after a long day exploring. And while it’s boutique in size, it delivers the amenities and atmosphere of a much larger luxury property. Whether you’re visiting Portsmouth for a weekend getaway, a celebration, or a business trip, Hotel Thaxter is absolutely the place to stay. It’s elegant, welcoming, and effortlessly memorable. I’ll 100% be returning.

My wife and I stayed here for a night on our honeymoon. The mobile check-in/check-out was extremely simple and easy. The hotel was beautiful, but the location is what really sets it apart. We were in walking distance to every thing we wanted to do in Portsmouth. Highly recommend!

We recently stayed at Hotel Thaxter for my office awards gala and were completely blown away. It was truly one of the nicest hotels we’ve ever stayed in — every single detail felt intentional and thoughtfully done. Check-in was incredibly easy, and they even parked our car for us. We could have checked in entirely without interacting with the front desk, but the staff was so welcoming and helpful when we did. Our room was stunning. Heated bathroom floors, a beautiful living room space, and a private bedroom made it feel luxurious yet comfortable. The bed was unbelievably comfortable, and honestly, everything we needed was already there — no detail overlooked. We grabbed drinks at the restaurant downstairs. While we aren’t huge sushi people, the service was excellent and the experience was still great. Every single staff member we interacted with was amazing — friendly, professional, and genuinely welcoming. We would 100% stay here again and highly recommend Hotel Thaxter to anyone looking for an exceptional experience.
